The boys invited to my backyard function

backyardboys

I love art. I especially love music. I search for it, I work while it pulsates through my body and I get dressed fast or slow depending on what I am playing at the moment. When I am not working I am looking up upcoming artists, prominent ones and old ones. Music to me sets my life soundtrack; I change artist and genres as I transition.

As of now I am all about boy energy and hanging out with whitty, silly, deep thinking, woman appreciating fellas. It’s as if I am the “chill girl” invited to hang with the “not so cool, cool dudes” at a back yard party while the sun hits our faces, we eat the best hummus, tostitos and chicken spinach barbecued sausages and vibe out about life, relationships and being real. So who’s at this back yard function? Check out my pals below:

Chance the Rapper

chancetableHe’s the little bro who just amazes me. I can talk to him about what it means to be a family man, solidify our approach for enhancing urban city scapes, getting youth involved in politics and crack the driest jokes you ever did hear.

Donald Glover
donaldgloverThis dude right here…well he’s a genius. I have loved Mr. Glover since I found a photo of him in a magazine 5 years ago or so highlighting his time as an actor on Community and as a script writer for 30 Rock. Let’s just say I identify with his “solemn appearance” and attention to authentic simplicity. He’s the dude that will appreciate my effort to be minimalist while wearing a white tee coordinated with my leather sandals and simple jewelry. At the same time we vibe about understatedness and getting hype off of “Trap” songs.

Anderson Paak

Anderson Paak is my guy. He is west coast cool with a pinch of jazz masters improvisational style and the boldness of a hip hop artist. I just think his voice is great, he makes his profanity work for his songs and we could argue all day about his use of the “B” word yet, I’ll love him despite it because I can’t live without his musical perspective and funk.

Kamau

kamuaKamau (kah-maw) will add the loving quirkiness we need to the mix to balance us out and keep it cool and light and deep all at the same time. I love his spin on music right now. I feel like he’ll whip out the guitar and we’ll improv a jam session about good vibes, good wine and backyard delights.

R.LUM.R

r-lumR.Lum.R is the mystery friend that will take us to church in a cool, “all the perfect tunes” road-trip-drive to New Orleans kind of way. I love his voice and his production. He’s so cool that he whips us up some mango salsa with habanero chiles in a matter of seconds and talks about his nights touring def poetry.

Raye (my token homegirl)

raye2I invited Raye but at the last minute she could not make it because writing her next big hit couldn’t wait and thus I had to entertain the “boys” alone. She would have reminded me to not take “no stuff” from my favorite guys and strolled in with 90s vibe chill, pick just the right moment to “call the boys out” on their crap and laugh hysterically at their sensitivity (a couple of them take themselves too seriously). I love her music especially as a happily-single woman. She has that confidence that spills over on you and strength that becomes apparent in her delivery that let’s you know when she says she is walking away and you’ll regret it, that is exactly what is going down.
